How to prioritise projects

Any energy and carbon reduction programme will contain a whole host of small, individual projects that will save energy, cost and carbon across the estate.  But which should you start to look at first?  Draw up a list of potential opportunities and then use an Ease + Effect matrix to assess each one. Decide how easy each opportunity is to implement, and how effective it would be once in place.  It’s easiest to do this on a flipchart, with each potential opportunity written on a sticky note, which can then be placed in the right box.

Ease=Effect

Your opportunities are now ranked 1-9, giving a clear priority list.  All of the opportunities in box 1 should be investigated first, whilst those in box 9 should wait until all of the easier and more effective opportunities have been exhausted.
