Make a Challenge, Save a Life: Electrical Safety Hour

The Make a Challenge, Save a Life campaign supports Network Rail’s safety vision of Everyone Home Safe Every Day.

Key Elements

Purpose:

  • Drive cultural changes to enhance electrical safety.
  • Learn from past electrical incidents to ensure lessons are applied.
  • Embed safety as a shared responsibility underpinned by a commitment to caring for each other.

Ask, Check, Challenge

To uphold our safety vision and show care for each other, every individual is encouraged to:

  1. Ask: Seek clarity about tasks involving overhead line equipment (OLE) or conductor rail equipment (CRE systems) when unsure.
  2. Check: Confirm that all safety standards, Life Saving Rules, and regulations are understood and being followed.
  3. Challenge: Speak up if something doesn’t feel safe, showing care for yourself and others.

What We Need from Line Managers and Supervisors:

  1. Download the Safety Pack: Select the relevant pack for OLE or CRE systems.
  2. Familiarise Yourself with the Content:
    • Review the facilitation notes provided in each pack.
    • Watch the accompanying film to understand the story and key messages.
  3. Book Your Team in for the Briefing: Schedule a session to deliver the content to your team.
  4. Provide Feedback: Ensure feedback from the briefing is completed and returned to help improve future initiatives.

Objectives and Actions

Understand the Importance of Safety Standards, Life Saving Rules, and Regulations:

  • Appreciate why adhering to these requirements is critical to our safety.
  • Highlight the real-world consequences of non-compliance through case studies and discussions.

Promote Safe Behaviours, Accountability, and Care:

  • Recognise behaviours that prioritise safety and demonstrate care for colleagues.
  • Build a culture where raising safety concerns is welcomed and acted upon.
