Our Health and Safety Vision

Network Rail Health and Safety Policy PosterThe Network Rail Health and Safety Vision policy helps protect us all – the public, our passengers and our people, under the the Health and Safety Vision Everyone Home Safe Every Day. It sets out the expectations we have, and the commitment our colleagues, contractors and suppliers have when working with us.

We have a strong commitment to health and safety, and we expect our people, including our contractors, to share our commitment to working safely and delivering our vision. This means obeying our lifesaving rules and speaking up when we see something that might be unsafe. We will stop work if it’s not safe, and personally intervene if we see something that isn’t safe. We will constantly look for new ways to keep ourselves, passengers and the public safe. It means managing and reducing overall health and safety risks across the railway system, to deliver a safe, cost-effective, reliable railway.

Not only do we move millions of people on a daily basis, we’re Britain’s biggest neighbour, as well as a significant employer, with over 45,000 colleagues working to keep Britain’s railway moving.

The Health and Safety policy – a two-page document – was updated in June 2024 and is displayed on safety bulletin boards at every one of our workplaces. It is available for download here:

Our Health and Safety Management System

To see the arrangements Network Rail has to deliver our health and safety policy, and the part you need to play in it, our Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) is a one-stop-shop for all this information. In its new iteration, it is more user-friendly than ever before, prioritising thoroughness of information without repetition, jargon or filler.
Health and Safety Management System document

Our HSMS sets out simply and clearly the arrangements in place to realise our Health and Safety Vision to get everyone home safe and healthy every day. It covers how we govern safety, allocate responsibilities and accountabilities, control our risks, manage interfaces, and drive continuous improvement. It’s a part of our framework for managing the business and delivering our strategic objectives, particularly our health and safety policy.
