SAI25 Briefings and Guidance

NR/L3/ELP/SAI25 working on about overhead line equipment (SAI) has been expanded to cover the Routes in Scotland’s Railway and Southern Regions, for compliance in January 2026.

The standard introduces a change to the way we plan and deliver isolations, specifically an enhanced electrical risk assessment and clarification on the management of distribution interfaces. Where introduced, SAI25 replaces NR/L3/ELP/29987, also known as the Green Book.

If you carry out work in Eastern, North West & Central, Scotland’s Railway and Southern Regions and hold one of the identified competencies below or carry out associated activities, you will need to review the detailed briefing(s) and update your Sentinel record, prior to the deployment area moving to SAI25.

If you work in Wales and Western Region, you do not need to review the detailed briefings at this time.

Following the publication of issue 5 of NR/L3/ELP/SAI25 on 6 September, the compliance date has changed to 26 January 2026, the coverage has expanded to include Scotland’s Railway and Southern and there are two updated forms, among other minor amendments. We are in the process of updating our detailed briefings below to incorporate these changes.
