Vehicle Tracking System (VTS)

A Vehicle Tracking System (VTS) is being fitted into Network Rail fleet vehicles to provide drivers with real-time feedback through a dashboard alarm and display; letting them know if they exceed the speed limit, and providing them with the opportunity to change their driving behaviour and stay within the speed limit.

The driver will be the first person to benefit from the use of the system.

The purpose of this system is to improve the safety of our drivers by reducing the risk of speeding within our network, and not to be used as a day-to-day tracking tool.

A contract has been awarded to Traffilog UK to supply, fit and collect the VTS data across our fleet.

VTS mobilisation commenced in November 2016 and a trial scheduled was held in December 2016 in our Wessex Route, prior to full implementation. A summary of the Wessex trial is now available.

Further Information

In the attachment section you will find a suite of materials, guides and a FAQ document which is regularly updated by the project team.

We also have a couple of short films explaining VTS,  Traffilog UK, and feedback from our contractors who have already implemented VTS, and from Mark Carne, Network Rail’s CEO endorsing the system.
