A person appointed to guide a driver of a train over a line with which he is not familiar or under special circumstances where the movement of trains is restricted. Or a member of staff with sole responsibility for authorising trains to move through an area that is subject to wrong-road working or a possession. Will usually ride in the cab of trains which are passing through their section. To eliminate any potential confusion, there is only ever one pilot for a particular section.
