Everyone working on the railway has the right to refuse work on grounds of health and safety. Worksafe procedures detail the method of dealing with immediate safety problems. They enable employees to challenge any safe system of work. The fundamental principle is that, if you have a safety concern, stop work immediately, ensuring that doing so does not endanger others, move to a position of safety and contact the person in charge, explaining why you have stopped the work.
The latest campaign from Safety 365 is "Speak up". This looks at the responsibility that everyone has to say if they don't feel safe. It includes a 6 minute film that can be used as part of a briefing.
