"
Providing the environmental expertise to support and enhance the business"
The railway is an inherently sustainable industry that has many environmental advantages over other forms of transport. However, in order to maintain this advantage, we must manage our environmental impacts and strive to improve both our own environmental performance and that of the whole industry.
The aim of the Environment section of Safety Central is to facilitate a greater understanding of Network Rail’s environmental risks and opportunities that will lead to the following benefits:
· A clear understanding of environmental issues facing the railway industry
· Appropriate policies and standards to ensure effective management
· Appropriate support, advice and guidance regarding environmental issues
· Improved environmental performance
This will help us achieve Network Rail’s environmental sustainability corporate goals of:
• Sustainable consumption and production
- by reducing waste, in terms of materials, water and land
- by increasing the use of sustainable materials
• Improving energy efficiency and reducing the reliance on fossil fuels in running the railway
- by encouraging a modal shift from less efficient forms of transport
- by improving the energy efficiency of running trains
- by improving the energy efficiency of our activities and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels
• Protection of natural resources
- by reducing the risk of impact on air quality and the natural environment
- by protecting our heritage and natural habitats and seeking opportunities to enhance them where reasonably possible
