National RRV Safety Improvement Programme

The aim of this programme is to reduce the risks associated with working with road rail vehicles by challenging behaviours, introducing new technology, providing training and raising awareness of risks. For example, in October 2011 we introduced radio headsets for machine controllers greatly improving their ability to communicate with the operator, early in 2012 we will be introducing exclusion zones to tackle visibility issues and we are even looking at how we design road rail vehicles to make them safer.

For more information on our key deliverables please view the  project plan (PPT 533 KB) or contact the project team:

Restriction on Type 9B (High Ride) RRVs without Rail Wheel Braking on gradients ≥ 1:75

The current restriction on type 9B RRVs will shortly be extended to a further 13 Delivery Unit areas: Edinburgh, Bristol, Manchester, Chester, Preston, Crewe, Carlisle, Leeds, Newcastle, Sheffield, Hitchin, York and Doncaster. To assist with the management of this please use this excel file to check the start and end mileages of those Line of Route that fall into the gradient category of greater than or equal to 1:75.
